Summer is here! I’ve been extremely busy on my clothing line. As some of you know, I started my business 6 months ago and things have been going quite well. It’s hard to be the main person in charge because everyone that works for you needs you all the time. A lot of times its hard to sit down and get that moment to sew for myself or the new collection. When I don’t get the chance to sew for myself, I love to wear skirts from own line (@tjsewercollection). And this one gets a lot of use.
So you guys should already know this by now but black is my favorite color and its a must for me to wear with almost everything. So ofcourse I had to pair a basic black tee with my midi skirt. I decided to add some pops of color with my shoes and necklace.
I love the look of midi skirts because they are so lady like and classy. You can never go wrong with looking classy!
I personally think that midi skirts flatter everyone. What are your thoughts? I always hear (majority from my beautiful plus size women) that midi skirts don’t look good on them. I wholeheartedly disagree. Comment below and tell me what you think.
Happy 4th of July everyone! Hope you are all in good health. Note: Click HERE to learn how to make the DIY Satin Necklace
So every Summer, I run into thrift stores and I grab a few pairs of jeans and turn them into shorts because let’s be real, who in the world wants to spend over $20 on some shorts that you can distress at home?! Not me! I purchased these Levi pants in the Men’s section at the thrift store. I remember doing a post about thrifting when I first started blogging and the #1 rule I mentioned was to be open minded. These “men’s” jeans are the perfect fit and surprisingly high-waist jeans. This cheap and easy look is everywhere and it’s extremely comfortable. My brother, whom some of you may know, has a men’s fashion blog and has recently posted an easy-to-follow tutorial on making your own distressed shorts. In the video, he features 2 styles that you can choose to create. I will link the video at the bottom of this post. But, for now, here is what I am wearing for the 4th (until I slip into some comfortable flats ofcourse!). Ok. Ok. You guys should already know that I love black and I wear it just about everyday. I’m slowly trying to sneak it into my blog without it looking boring. When wearing black, something about your outfit or accessories should standout. Not necessarily like a pop of color, but just something. In a previous post, I wore a simple t-shirt dress and paired it with simple leopard sneakers. Well, I loved that dress so much, that I decided that I was going to recreate that dress but add something to it, so I added a flutted hem. All I did to make this dress was, create a pattern using my t-shirt dress that I own. It was quite easy. The dress took me a total of 3-4 hours to make. It was quick and I definitely plan on making another one. The fabric that I used was a one way knit fabric. I didn’t want too much stretch, but I wanted it to have some stretch and some movement to it. Also, the fabric that I chose, made the hem of the skirt move more freely and take it’s shape that I love so much. So, here is my look all pulled together. All accessory details will be listed at the end of this post.

Be prepared to see another dress like this because this is a must have in my closet. Do you love simple wearable dresses as much as I do?
So in my previous post, you’ve seen my beauty must haves. Along with beauty comes fashion, so here are my top fashion summer essentials and the reasons why I love them. 1. Birkenstocks: These sandals are what’s hot for this season. They have been seen on just about every fashion blogger and every celeb. Not only do they pair well with so many outfits, but they are extremely comfortable. Also, I cannot forget to mention that they look good on everyone no matter your age or sex. Isn’t that great!? Mine were given to me as a graduation gift from my little brother of the men’s fashion blog Victor Alexander. And as a lover of black, the color that he chose for me was perfect. They are a bit pricey, but they are well worth it. I promise you.
2. Panama Hat: These straw hats have been everywhere these past couple of years and I finally got my hands on one. Let me first say that I usually hate hats and I usually hate putting anything on my head, but when I found this hat and tried it on, I felt that this hat looked great on me. I love this hat. It looks great when I wear my hair down in a straight style, with a side bun, or with a side braid. It’s a very simple piece, but it’s a great addition to everyone’s closet.
3. Brightly Colored Open Toe Heels: Ok. So I spotted these in a video by one of my favorite Youtubers, Hey Claire. I absolutely love her style. It’s so simple and clean. Anyhow, once I saw them in one of her hauls, so of course, I had to get them. I went to Zara in DC recently and they were having an amazing sale. Who knew Zara had sales? Anyhow, these heels were on sale for only $39.99. They didn’t have my size in the store so I quickly ordered them online. I cannot wait to wear these. They are so sexy and the hubby told me he loved them on me. So obviously, they are a winner in my book!
4. Brightly Colored Crossbody Bag: Because I wear a lot of black, I accessorize with brightly colored accessories and this bag gives me that perfect pop of color that I need. This Kate Spade bag was gifted to my as a graduation gift by my husband. I was absolutely shocked that he even picked this out. I love that it’s small for those days that I will be walking for long periods of time and do not desire to carry a big bag. The small size is perfect! I’ve always dreamt of owning a Kate Spade and this bag couldn’t be more perfect. Love it!
5. Bralettes: These are a fun addition to any Summer wardrobe. These make a subtly sexy statement when worn under loose tanks or with tops with low hanging armholes. It’s a small added detail when pairing with simple tops and takes your outfit up to another level. I got mine from Charlotte Russe for $4/each. Can’t beat that price!
What are you fashion summer essentials? I’d love to know.
So let me first mention that I purchased this fabric last year at Hancock Fabrics, so if you go looking for it, unfortunately it may not be there anymore, but there are plenty of African or tribal prints on fabric.com that you may love. It took me a year to figure what I wanted to make with because I loved it so much. I wanted to make sure that whatever I made with it, it was going to be something that I would get a lot of wear out of. So after a year of brainstorming, I figured, why not make a shift dress? Shift dresses are perfect for moms because you look easily put together and it’s such a classic piece that you can wear for years. I created 2 recently which you may have seen on IG (@cheapbutchic); one with a pattern and one I made without a pattern. But for this particular shift dress, I did use a pattern and I adjusted it quite a bit. So the pattern I used was Simplicity 1878 from the lisette line.
If you look close, you’ll notice that the front is two separate pieces; top and bottom. I wanted it to be one solid piece in the front, so I taped the top and bottom pattern pieces together and made sure to include the allowance. I also didn’t like the neckline. I wanted something more simple instead if the V shape, so I altered that as well. Now for the front and back pieces of the dress, I wanted the bottom to look more like the bottom of a button-up shirt. I wanted my sheath dress to look & feel like I was wearing my husbands button-up so, I traced the bottom corner of his shirt onto my pattern and that is how I got the bottom to look like a men’s button up shirt. I also want to add that I inserted an invisible zipper and two darts in the back.
So I love to have fun taking pictures every now and then so when I pictured the photoshoot for this dress, I pictured my self having big hair in the woods. LOL! So, me and my brother made it work and I think they came out fantastic.

Today I am channeling my inner Carrie Bradshaw! I made a different style of tulle skirt this time compared to the one that I previously posted that you can check out here. This skirt is more of circle skirt style. It has a lot more movement and when making one, it’s more tedious because it uses a lot more tulle. If you are interested in making one, the tutorial is located at the bottom of this post.
For the underlining, I chose a satin fabric and purchased about 2 yards. As for the tulle, I used about 8 yards. And instead of a thick waistband that I usually like on my skirts, I chose to do a skinnier waistband which gave it a more delicate feel. Tulle skirts are great and so versatile. You can wear them to a wedding, a party, brunch or tea party with the ladies. If you follow me on Instagram @CHEAPBUTCHIC, you’ll be able to recognize this shot. Leopard heels with a tulle skirt is such an unexpected accessory but gives the outfit a more edgy type look. So like a said, tulle skirts are absolutely versatile and should be in your closet.
So here is how I styled my skirt:
Crop Top: Charlotte Russe// Tulle Skirt: DIY// Necklace: Charlotte Russe// Heels: Target// Sunnies: JC Penny
Ok. So I’ve seen a lot of celebrities lately wearing high waist skirts and crop tops. It’s such a simple yet sexy look. So I decided to take it on.
So as you all know, I have just learned how to draft a pattern for a crop top, but I wanted another easier option for those of us they are not interested in drafting patterns so here is the perfect option for you. THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX. So when you look at patterns, do you just look at it for what it is? Do you just look at the picture on the front of the pattern envelope without imagining other possibilities? Well guess, there are so many possibilities to a pattern. You just have to be imaginative and creative.
So for this crop top, I saw New Look 0944/ Simplicity 6243 and fell in love. The only thing was, I just wanted the top portion of this dress so I figured, why not?! I felt it was different from the other crop tops currently out on the market so I had to have it. So to make this top, here are the cut-outs that I used 1 thru 8. One thing I must mention is to add an invisible zipper in the back for easy wear. And if I had to a a review n this pattern, I’d have to say that this sort of top is not for beginners and I hated the binding. I didn’t like the look of it. I felt it was too stiff. It may have been the fabric that I chose, but I didn’t care for it too much. I think that was the biggest headache of this top. If you are going to try this top, use a llighter weight fabric. I used twill which looks and feel great, but for binding, not so much. As for the pencil skirt, I used Simplicity 1559. The skirt was easy and straight to the point. I did however make a few adjustments. I chose to make ‘F’. I made the skirt a few inches longer and the slit a few inches higher. Hope that got your creative juices goiing. Remember to think outside the box. Be your own designer and create for your own body type. So here is my look put together. Thanks for stopping by. XOXO.
So over the course of a few weeks I’ve stopped by a few stores and luckily I scored great deals on some amazing shoes. I can honestly say that I was extremely lucky on a few of these purchases. You will definitely see them in my outfits of the day photos for Spring and Summer. So along with a video haul discussing the prices , look, and feel of the shoes, I decided to take aditional photos so that you guys can take a closer look of the detail in each shoe.
Share your favorite places to shop for shoes below. I would love to hear and I’d definitely love to check those places out. Thanks for stopping by.
The weather has been so crazy lately right? But, that’s not going to keep me from wanting to start Spring early. I must say, Fall and Spring are my two favorite seasons. The colors and perfect temperature that each season brings just makes me so very happy and inspired.
So for my first “Sew with Me” video for Spring, I chose to make a peplum top using McCalls 6896. I promise you guys, this pattern is extremely easy. You can probably make a couple of these on a lazy Saturday. I would definitely make another one very soon. This top is perfect for outings wth your girls, a date with your man, or just a regular shopping trip at the mall. The shape of a peplum is so flattering on so many shapes and it’s perfect for every age group, so why not make one!?
So for Spring, I wanted start off by bringing the floral print and bold Spring colors. As soon as I saw this fabric (from JoAnn Fabrics), I knew exactly what I wanted to make with it and had my outfit already put together in mind. Since the top was quite bold with color, I decided to style my peplum top with a few simple, neutral pieces. I paired my peplum with some white skinny jeans and nude pumps. I pulled the pink out of the shirt with a bold pink lip (Nyx Shocking Pink) and a clutch I made myself.

If you have not gone to Target lately and looked at their Clearance, you are definitely missing out. I scored a great deal in their lately. I bought several pairs of heels for $11.98 and the tops were between 50%-60% off. I need to do a haul or something.
Lately, I have not had the time to sew because of the classes that I’m taking. I’m graduating really soon so these classes are becoming more and more challenging. In the meantime though, I can still play dress up! Head on over to Target and see what you can find. If you’ve found any deals, comment below and let me know what you found.
