Celeb Look for Less: Floral Bomber Jacket

Hi everyone! Long time no see huh?! Well I had to take a much needed break, but no worries, I’m back. So I recently watched Sex and the City for the first time (I know. I know. I’m late!) And while watching, I was so inspired by the amount of fashion risks that Ms. Carrie Bradshaw took. I loved her extreme take on clothes. For example, she always went overboard with what she wore when just performing simple tasks. I thought it was hilarious and I loved it. So, let’s talk about my inspiration…bomberCollage Don’t you just love this jacket?! It’s so darn fabulous! It’s such a cool piece that can easily be dressed up or down, which is what I love about it.  It’s an easy piece that you throw on and can easily look pulled together. When walking through JoAnns Fabric Store, I remember spotting a similar style fabric in the Prom/ Wedding section. I NEVER would have though to turn this fabric into a jacket. It’s so clever and it’s such an unexpected fabric choice. So of course, I had to have it!
bomberIf you are looking to recreate this jacket and you are not interested in black, there are other colors; off-white and blush pink. Not a huge selection but with these colors are perfect neutrals. I’m actually thinking about making a pink one…hmmmm. The fabric is a bit pricey, $25/yd, but if you wait for a 50% off coupon the cost will be easier to cope with. LOL! It did for me at least. Also, the best part is, you’ll only need about 1.5 yds depending on the size you make. So can we say “Cheap but Chic!?”

bomber1The pattern that I chose to recreate Ms. Bradshaw’s floral bomber is New Look’s 6226 from the Project Runway line of patterns. This jacket is fully lined and was pretty easy to make. The instructions were clear and easy to follow. I would say that this is for the intermediate seamstress, not so much for the beginner only because there a few techniques used that a beginner may not understand just yet.  I did have to make a change to the outcome of my jacket versus how it is supposed to be made.  I removed the panel in the center of the jacket. With the fabric that I chose, it would not have looked proportionate. If you choose a less bulkier, more simpler fabric, I think the panel in the front would be fine.

bomber3Ok. So I am going to style my jacket in a few different ways. Today, I wanted to dress my jacket casually with some simple thrifted distressed jean shorts, tights, and boots.  This is a look that I would wear when hanging out with the girls or shopping. And of course, you all know I love my black. 🙂

What are your thoughts on bomber jackets? Is it a closet staple for you this season?

Keep it Short

So for the past couple of years, matching shorts sets have been a definite trend that’s been seen everywhere; whether it’s on your favorite celebs, your favorite fashion bloggers, or just random people you see on the street.  So, I figured why not make one?  But of course, I had to wait until I found the perfect fabric to get the look that I was looking for. When this outfit what finished, I wanted it to be bold, bright, and fun.  I wanted the shorts set to be the image of what Summer style should be; effortless, yet fashionable.
kisI’ve always seen Ankara fabric on other fashion bloggers, but I’ve never seen it for myself in person.  So while in New York, I came across several stores that sold this type of fabric and one particular store had this one for $5/yd!  That’s crazy cheap right?! SOLD!!! I bought a few yards and made this short set for myself and made a simple pillow case dress for my daughter that you can check out HERE if you haven’t seen it yet.
shortsetSo a lot of the shorts sets that I’ve seen were extremely short. If you can’t tell already, I’m quite conservative.  When I make clothes for myself, I keep in mind that first, I am a mom, and second, I am a married woman. I keep my sexiness very subtle. With that in mind, I kept the length of shorts decent enough to be able to go on an outing with my family and be able to still look chic while being quite comfortable.
kis4Let’s talk about the patterns. As you can probably already tell, this outfit was very easy to make.  I think each item took about 2-2.5 hours to complete. So a total of 4-5 hours for the entire look.  The instructions on both patterns were easy to follow and I didn’t need to make too many adjustments. The only adjustment that I made was shortening the top so that it sits just above my hips. My hips are kind of wide, and I did not want my shirt pulled down tight around my hips or bunched up around my stomach area. I wanted the look to be nice and crisp.

Is it bright out here, or it just me?!

Hi ladies and gents!
So for June, Pretty Girls Sew picked out a very flattering maxi dress who’s details are to die for.  I loved the cinched-in waist, the drop front and back neckline and the tie strap that went across the top, back. The pattern that was used this month was McCalls M6700 or another name for it was Project Runway’s MP300.

So the theme for this month was Summer. When I think of Summer, I already knew I wanted to find fabric that brought out one of this year’s hottest trend; neon.
neon collage I must say, a flattering neon fabric is absolutely hard to find.  I got lucky though. I found my fabric on Fabric.com for only $5.98/ yd.  Here is the description of the fabric: Designer Stretch ITY Jersey Knit Floral Stripe Pink/Gold.juneSo here is my interpretation of the dress.  Like always, I changed up the dress a bit.  Nothing drastic, but I added a high slit.  I was channeling my inner JLO and Angelina Jolie. So what do you guys think?

DSC_0233Lipstick that I chose to wear is Milani’s Sweet Nectar.  This color is perfect for Summer and for those of us that want to try out an Orange lippie for a great price. You can purchase this one at your local drugstore.
