So a few weeks ago, I showed you guys a Thrifted haul and I told you guys that I was going to transform a few of the things that I purchased. One of those things was this blue dress. I know. I know. It’s hideous. And you are probably thinking, what the heck was I thinking, right? Well, This wouldn’t be “Cheap but Chic” if I couldn’t tell you how to think outside of the box and make something that looks amazing…..for little money of course! So, trench vests are in! And I love them. Its such a perfect piece to wear to the office or a casual shopping day. Here is my inspiration: Aren’t they chic?!?!? I love trench vests. So what I did was really easy!
1. Remove sleeves and hem.
2. Update buttons
One of things that I looked for when creating this coat was the fabric. The fabric had to be durable, and it had to be a medium-weight feel like trench coat fabrics are. Another thing that I looked for was the double breasted button closures. This to me, was a no brainer. Once I saw this, I immediately thought trench coat! I paired mine with a simple white t-shirt, jeans, and nude pumps. I allowed my trench vest to get all of the attention in this outfit. I’m definitely excited to add this to my closet. So I have been wanting a Makeup Vanity for so long. Obviously there are plenty out there, but the prices were killing me! There were even some really nice ones on Craigslist, but I would have had to drive too many miles just to pick it up, and I know my husband wouldn’t be up for that. So I decided to try a desk when I saw this one in the store. It was small enough to be a vanity and had enough drawers to house all my makeup.
This desk was only $10! I purchased it at the Goodwill and it was on sale that week. So I thought that was a score.
I wanted a really clean & classy look to it, so I decided to paint it black and white. We purchased some inexpensive paint from Walmart and came out with something that was better than I could find in a store for the price that I got it for.
If you decide to upcycle some furniture or even make your own Makeup Vanity, send me a pic or comment below. I would love to see! Here are the steps that I took to complete this project.
1. Removed hardware and sanded old varnish or paint off of the desk.
2. Painted desk with a primer, preferably Kilz.
3. Paint desk with white paint.
4. Outlined each drawer with a paint brush and black paint (You don’t need much so you can purchase a sample size from Lowes).
5. When the desk has completely dried, I sprayed it with a clear protectant.
6. For the hardware, I spray painted it with a glossy black spray paint. Once dry, I sprayed a clear protectant over it and screwed it back onto the desk.
Here is another photoshoot that I did with my litte brother. I kew I wanted to take a picture in a full skirt but unfortunately I was not able to find one. When I walked into my local goodwill, I was amazed when I saw this dress. I like it because I wanted to show people how you can transform something so hideous into something so beautiful. I simply cut the top off and made a full skirt. Thanks to my brother, the photoshoot turned out awesome. I hope you all are inspired to not turn your nose up at all thrifted finds. Turn it into something AMAZING!
