Pom Poms

How fun is this midi skirt!? I love this freakin skirt! LOL! Some say it’s a party in a skirt. ūüôā¬†You can’t really tell from the photos, but the pink pom poms on the skirt stick out and gives the skirt a fun texture.¬† People always ask me “How long did it take you to sew all of those pom poms on there?” LOL!¬† I’ll never tell! ūüėȬ† This skirt is apart of my Limited Edition Collection from my line.¬† You can find it HERE.

I decided to go unexpected and pair this skirt with a light blue button up shirt.  And I loved playing with the contrasting print of the polka look of the skirt so I paired it with my favorite striped heels.  This is such a fun party look.  I definitely had fun wearing it.  Comment below and tell me what your ideal party look would be.

Sapphire Summer

So it’s halfway through the year. Time went by so fast. My business is officially 8 months today!¬† Looking back, I’ve worked my ass off and have learned so much about this business. Although wishing I’d gone to fashion school, I feel like what I’m doing now is the path I’m supposed to be going down.¬† Everything is falling into place and God has literally sent the most amazing people in my life that I would have never seen myself even meeting.

For several years, I prayed that God bless me with my dream job. I prayed for this but not knowing what I wanted my dream job to be.¬† I can truly say that the empire that I am building is the dream job that God dreamt for me.¬† I really wish that I could show you all everything that has happened from April 2013 until now.¬† To think that I’ve ONLY been sewing for 2 years and now own my clothing line that is already in a couple stores within the first year of¬†my collection launching¬†blows my mind.¬† I seriously cannot fathom all of this. I really wish I could take you all down memory lane to see all of the people that I’ve met that volunteered to help me because they believed in me and my brand.¬† These people aren’t just some airheads off the street either. These are some extremely smart people who I still cannot believe they were sent my way. God truly works in mysterious ways.¬† It makes me tear up just looking back at all that has happened and the things I know the future holds.¬† The project that I am working on now behind the scenes¬†literally blows my mind. I cannot even believe that I’m even in the position to be doing it.¬† God is good. He is good to me.¬† If you want something bad enough, put in the work.¬† I hate reading, but I read about the business because I want to be successful.¬† I’m an introvert and hate being around a lot of people, but God has literally pushed me out there and I’ve have the most extraordinary people.¬† I hate public speaking, but with this business, that totally goes out the window. It’s all or nothing.¬† When you have to talk about yourself as a designer and talk about your collection, you have one shot. It’s all God though.¬† God made all of this possible. I give him all of the glory and all of the praise.

Stripes on Stripes

I am about that Midi Skirt life! My most favorite part about owning my own clothing label, (TJ Sewer, LLC) is that I own every single piece from each collection. Besides my black & white polka dot midi, this one is another favorite of mine.¬† Its so New York City Chic!¬† This is one of the skirts that I can definitely see Carrie Bradshaw wearing.¬† The stripes are so bold, yet classic.¬† And ofcourse, I had to top it off with my favorite striped heels. I have gotten so many compliments on my¬†outfit today.¬†It’s such an easy, put-together look that I love!

BTW, I am on a weight loss journey. I’m documenting my journey on snapchat.¬† I talk about my starting weight, my clothing size, and how many pounds I’ve lost so far.¬† Snapchat is RAW!¬† No makeup, no glamour. It’s just me being me. So far I’ve lost 8 pounds. Not only do I talk about weight loss, but you get a behind the scenes of my work that I do for YouTube, my blog, and my clothing label.¬†I definteily do a lot and stay very busy.¬† If you are interested, come check me out on¬†Snapchat: tjsewer

Muave Midi

Summer is here!¬† I’ve been extremely busy on my clothing line.¬† As some of you know, I started my business 6 months ago and things have been going quite well. It’s hard to be the main person in charge because everyone that works for you needs you all the time.¬† A lot of times its hard to sit down and get that moment to sew for myself or the new collection. When I don’t get the chance to sew for myself, I love to wear skirts from own line (@tjsewercollection). And this one gets a lot of use.

muaveSo you guys should already know this by now but black is my favorite color and its a must for me to wear with almost everything. So ofcourse I had to pair a basic black tee with my midi skirt.  I decided to add some pops of color with my shoes and necklace.

muave2

I love the look of midi skirts because they are so lady like and classy.  You can never go wrong with looking classy!

muave3I personally think that midi skirts flatter everyone. What are your thoughts?¬† I always hear (majority from my beautiful plus size women) that midi skirts don’t look good on them.¬† I wholeheartedly disagree. Comment below and tell me what you think.

Yetunde Sarumi

Hi Everyone!!!! Yes I know, I know. I’ve been gone for way too long, but I’m back!¬† Can I just tell you how much I’ve missed blogging! So later on,¬†I will be writing a blog post about why I’ve been gone. But for those of you who don’t follow me on Instagram (@cheapbutchic) or any of my social media sites, I’ll tell you that I have been extremely busy launching my business. But again, that’s a different blog post. For now, I will be supporting my dear friend, Yetunde Sarumi.

Yetunde aka¬†Ye¬†is a fellow¬†DIY fashion blogger and¬†one of my business partners in our growing company, Pretty Girls Sew.¬† Ye launched her clothing line a few months ago and I cannot say enough good things¬†about it.¬† The prints are beautiful, it’s beautifully made, and it’s affordable.¬† When she launched her pieces for the Summer, I went crazy over her Summer jacket and knew I had to have it.
me¬†¬† There are so many ways you can style this jacket which I am beyond excited about, but today, I decided to style it as¬†my Sunday’s Best.¬† I styled my Yetunde Sarumi jacket with a¬†basic trumpet dress I made recently.¬† I decided to pair my jacket with a black dress because I wanted my jacket to be the center of attention.

Thrifted Refashion: Trench Vest

Welcome Back!
So a few weeks ago, I showed you guys a Thrifted haul and I told you guys that I was going to transform a few of the things that I purchased.  One of those things was this blue dress.
trench1I know. I know. It’s hideous. And you are probably thinking, what the heck was I thinking, right?¬† Well, This wouldn’t be “Cheap but Chic” if I couldn’t tell you how to think outside of the box and make something that looks amazing…..for¬†little money¬†of course!¬† So, trench vests are in! And I love them.¬† Its such a perfect piece to wear to the office or a casual shopping day.¬† Here is my inspiration:
karla11Aren’t they chic?!?!? I love trench vests.¬† So what I did was really easy!
1. Remove sleeves and hem.
2. Update buttons
3. Press
4. Done

trenchOne of things that I looked for when creating this coat was the fabric.¬† The fabric had to be durable, and it had to be a medium-weight feel like trench coat fabrics are.¬† Another thing that I looked for was the double breasted button closures. This to me, was a¬†no brainer.¬† Once I saw this, I immediately thought trench coat! I paired mine with a simple white t-shirt, jeans, and nude pumps.¬† I allowed my trench vest to get all of the attention in this outfit. I’m definitely excited to add this to my closet.

Thrifted Refashion: Wool Skirt

A couple posts back, I showed you all my thrift haul and I told gave you some insight on how I wanted to refashion or alter a few of the pieces that I picked up.
thrifthaul1When I saw this particular wool skirt, I pictured an older woman wearing this with a matching wool jacket and white botton-up top.  I loved the structure of this skirt but wanted to put a younger spin on it, so the easiest thing to do was to shorten it and pair it with bright fun colors.
woolblogIn the Fall, I throw on black tights with just about everything and with Hanes, they have so many fun prints that take my basic black into something fun and unexpected.  I was sent a few tights to style and I absolutely love them all.  Thank you Hanes!
hanesThe tights that I chose to wear with this outfit are the Hanes Silk Reflections Animal Tights.¬† They’re modern and it brings an unexpected sexiness to my casual outfit.¬† Throw¬†on a pair of¬†printed tights¬†and you’ve automatically updated your outfit.

Thank you Hanes for sponsoring this post.

Sheath Dress with Leather Details

When Balmain hit the runway for the Fall fashion show this year, it had everyone’s attention.¬† Every single detail within each garment was beyond amazing. Every piece was literally wearable art.
Vogue Foundation Gala Arrivals - Paris Fashion Week : Haute-Couture Fall/Winter 2014-2015Although I am no where near as designed oriented as these high fashion designers, I was truly inspired by them.  I loved the colors and textures that each design carries.
milblogOlive being one of the hottest colors for Fall, I wanted to create a simple sheath dress while incorporating a simple detailing of leather.¬† I can sort of picture Kim K. wearing my dress. Can’t you? LOL! (Only in my dreams)
mil1blogAs for the dress, I used New Look’s 0167, view B. (I found it at a yard sale)¬† I basically made the dress exactly how the instructions stated. I looked at it and just thought it was quite boring so, I had some extra leather laying around so I decided that I wanted to incorporate it in the dress somehow. I played with a few designs, but¬†ended up with this one.¬†¬†I cut the shoulders of the dress apart and added¬†the leather.¬† I understitched the neckline for the main part of the¬†dress, but for the leather, I¬†topstitched.
mil3blogI really loved how this dress came out. It looks a high-end,¬†designer dress, but of course we all know that¬†it wasn’t.¬† I purchased 2 yards of the fabric for $5/yd while in NY and the leather was scraps that¬†I found laying around my house.

Celeb Look for Less: Floral Bomber Jacket

Hi everyone! Long time no see huh?! Well I had to take a much needed break, but no worries, I’m back. So I recently watched Sex and the City for the first time (I know. I know. I’m late!) And while watching, I was so inspired by the amount of fashion risks that Ms. Carrie Bradshaw took. I loved her extreme take on clothes. For example, she always went overboard with what she wore when just performing simple tasks. I thought it was hilarious and I loved it. So, let’s talk about my inspiration…bomberCollage¬†Don’t you just love this jacket?! It’s so darn fabulous! It’s such a cool piece that can easily be dressed up or down, which is what I love about it.¬† It’s an easy piece that you throw on and can easily look pulled together. When walking through JoAnns Fabric Store, I remember spotting a similar style fabric in the Prom/ Wedding section. I NEVER would have though to turn this fabric into a jacket. It’s so clever and it’s such an unexpected fabric choice.¬†So of course, I had to have it!
bomberIf you are looking to recreate this jacket and you are not interested in black, there are other colors; off-white and blush pink. Not a huge selection but with these colors are perfect neutrals. I’m actually thinking about making a pink¬†one…hmmmm.¬†The fabric is a bit pricey, $25/yd, but if you wait for a 50% off coupon¬†the cost will be easier to cope with. LOL! It did for me at least. Also, the best part is,¬†you’ll only need about 1.5 yds depending on the size you make. So can we say “Cheap but Chic!?”

bomber1The pattern that I chose to recreate Ms. Bradshaw’s floral bomber is New Look’s 6226 from the Project Runway line of patterns. This jacket is fully lined and was pretty easy to make. The instructions were clear and easy to follow. I would say that this is for the intermediate seamstress, not so much for the beginner only because there a few techniques used that a beginner may not understand just yet.¬† I did have to make a change to the outcome of my jacket versus how it is supposed to be made.¬† I removed the panel in the center of the jacket. With the fabric that I chose, it would not have looked proportionate. If you choose a less bulkier, more simpler fabric, I think the panel in the front would be fine.

bomber3Ok. So I am going to style my jacket in a few different ways. Today, I wanted to dress my jacket¬†casually with some simple thrifted distressed jean shorts, tights, and boots.¬† This is a look that I would wear when hanging out with the girls or shopping. And of course, you all know I love my black. ūüôā
